The changing
face of the Bermuda bag
For those of you not familiar with this term, it has been
defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as “an oval handbag
with wooden handles and decorative removable covers”. The
principle feature of the Bermuda bag is the fact that it is made
of wood, both the handles, and it would seem, the main body of
the bag too. Of course, this makes for a surface that can be
easily decorated, and even he possibility that you can
personalize your Bermuda bag in a way that was not possible in
the past.
Another distinct advantage that the Bermuda bag has over other
handbags and luggage in general is that it is more solid. It is
perfectly possible to find versions which are entirely made of
painted wood, which might not seem practical on the carrying
front, but which are certainly useful if you anticipate them
taking a knock.
On the other hand, the Bermuda bag has undergone a bit of a
change over the years, and now more consumer oriented flavors
have hit the market. These tend not to be completely wooden in
appearance, but only have wooden handles, and a fabric back
part.
The fabric part of the Bermuda bag can be exchanged for other
colors and styles, which means that only the handle remains the
same day in and day out. This is part of the undeniable
popularity of the bag as a gift, but also as a fashion accessory
which can change with the seasons and mood of the owner.
