The world of luxury handbags

Like all designer luggage, luxury handbags serve several purposes. They are a badge, and sign, something to carry around that is chic and causes envy and admiration in people who see you carrying one. On the other hand, luxury handbags have to serve as a convenient way to carry around your belongings –from makeup to money and probably your cell phone or PDA. If a handbag does not serve this purpose, it does not matter how exclusively chic it might be, you will not get the pleasure out of owning it that you should do.

Vintage luxury handbags, such as those made in the 1960s and 1970s were very much more elaborate than many of today’s equivalents. They were made from exotic materials, such as rhinestone and crocodile skin, tortoiseshell and the classic handbag material – leather. These days, leather is about as ostentatious a material as is used, except for the recent trend towards man made materials.

Modern luxury handbags can be made of anything from leather, suede and nubuck, through to rubber and plastic. Even the chicest designers have turned their attention to alternatives to leather and animal materials. Whether this is to somehow tap into the affluent end of the anti leather movement, or to try and give a new look to designer luggage, it is clear that these new fabrics and materials look every bit as good as those used in the past.

Colors tend to be more vibrant too – some of the plush leather look handbags can now be made to glow in neon pink, or be semi transparent, giving a translucent look which appeals to the younger jet set generation.
