On the go with a garment bag

If you do not want to carry an entire suitcase around with you, then perhaps a garment bag is the ideal solution. These are kind of soft bags which have coat hangers inside, which you can hang your clothes on and then fold, zipper up and carry like a suitcase. The difference between a garment bag and a full suitcase is in the fact that, being just a bag, it is considerably lighter, and also more practical.

For example, when you get to your destination, it is the work of a moment to hang up your garment bag in the wardrobe, before rushing off to that business lunch. If you take a suitcase with you then you fall into the trap of either spending half an hour at the hotel upon your arrival unpacking, or you leave the clothes in it so that they are creased for the next day.

Thanks to modern technology, we now have versions of the humble garment bag which have little wheels on them so that you can pull them through the airport rather than having to carry them like a briefcase. These tend to be somewhat bulkier than the regular bags and will definitely have to go in the hold and not as hand baggage.

This is not a problem, since one thing that the garment bag does that suitcases don’t is bend, thus preventing, to a certain extent, damage, but also meaning that the bag can get caught in a strange position and put unusual creases in your clothes. Thus it is not the best solution for a long haul flight.

A tri-fold garment bag however does not have this problem, and can fit in an overhead bin on an aircraft. Folding three times means that it is more like a small case than a bag.
