Motorcycle luggage can
make or break a road trip
Thinking of taking your cruiser on an extended trip? Read on to
learn about the available types of motorcycle luggage that will
efficiently stow and protect your gear. It doesn’t matter what
brand of bike you have. There are models of motorcycle luggage
made for every make and model cycle on the road. Here’s some
info on what you should look for.
Saddlebags. Saddlebags come in hard- and soft-sided models. The
choice is up to you, but generally, soft-sided bags will hold
more gear, so you can stuff in that last souvenir. Hard-sided
bags will protect your possessions but are generally a lot more
expensive. While soft-side “throwover” saddlebags can cost well
under $100, hard-sided bags are often 5 or 6 times that price.
Many types of soft-sided motorcycle luggage like saddlebags are
universal – they will fit any brand of bike. Hard-sided bags
usually are made for a specific make and model. Hard-sided bags
for a Harley won’t fit on a Honda. Finally, beware of cheap
construction. Low-priced soft bags are usually not leather and
are unlikely to hold up to years of use.
Sissy bar bags. Why not make use of the top of your sissy bar
and slip on a roomy, soft-sided fabric or leather bag? These
bags are usually designed with hook-and-loop closures and plenty
of external pockets for gear like your cell phone and
sunglasses. Since this type is motorcycle luggage is highly
visible, you can choose embroidered or embossed designs to
decorate the bag. Eagles and Maltese crosses are common, as is
the brand name or model of your bike. Prices can range from $45
to $150. Again, pay attention to construction and durability.
Tank panels. Generally crafted for a specific make and model
bike, tank panels are sleek and elegant pieces of motorcycle
luggage. Tank panels are perfect for stowing keys, sunglasses,
cell phones, garage door openers and other small but essential
items. Non-marring scratch resistant backs will not damage the
tank. Tank panels are often embroidered or embossed with the
cycle’s make or model.
When fitting your bike with motorcycle luggage, optimize the
space and surfaces you have. Organize your gear and stow it
where it will be protected but easy to reach. With the right
luggage, your motorcycle trip will be more enjoyable if you
always opt for quality products.
