Tips on air travel with
snowboard bags!
As you know airlines have been
been charging a levy oversized baggage. You might be wondering if
this applies to ski and snowboard bags as well. Here is the good
news-they can still fly free. Airlines realize that sports travel
is an important component of the tourism industry, which is why
they make exceptions for certain kinds of sports equipment like
snowboard bags. But it is always wise not to push the limits. Here
are some luggage tips for traveling by air with your snowboarding
gear.
Always watch your snowboard bags’
weight. Your bag will be charged if it weighs more than 70 pounds.
Bags that carry one set of snowboards usually won't exceed that
limit. A double bag may or may not fly free, depending how you use
it. If two people traveling together use a double bag you might be
allowed. But if the double bag belongs to one person, it could be
subject to excess baggage charges.
Remember that each ticketed
customer gets the same luggage allowance. If someone in your group
is planning to rent equipment and is taking just one checked bag,
he or she can transport the boards on behalf of the person who
wants to take two pairs of snowboards. While your instinct will
tempt you to do it, avoid locking your snowboard bags. The metal
edges and binding components of snowboard gear are probably likely
to set off a false positive during luggage screening. As per rules
effective January 2003, locks on bags and sports luggage may be
broken off to check contents manually, which will cause a delay,
besides damaging your gear.
